What is an Activity Box?

Activity boxes contain all the materials and instructions for a purposeful, short, structured task. They aim to offer both familiarity and appropriate challenge.

An activity may involve one or more physical and mental skillsets, eg. sorting, threading, collating, matching, building, making, stacking, balancing, using fine motor skills such as grip, squeeze, grasp and bilateral coordination.

Our Activity Boxes meet the needs of various curricula and requirements for stimulating activities.

Benefits of Activity Boxes

Activity boxes provide an easy learning experience - a visual, single-unit task that is broken down into small steps that can be completed independently and address various skills. They requires little or no written or verbal instruction.

  • Building Skills

Our activity boxes will include work-readiness skills such as order fulfilment and assembly, to help develop preemployment skills, and will avoid infantalising users. The tasks will be enjoyable, reusable, and use manipulative realworld materials (rather than flat/printed resources).

  • Safely Reusing Materials

Whilst being mindful or risk and safety, our boxes will reuse a variety of materials, including wood, metal and plastc. The majority of our activities will be two-way, allowing tasks to be completed one-way and then in reverse (such as building and then dismantling)

  • Accessibility

To add further value, boxes will come with instructions (for someone wishing to facilitate the activity), visual task cards (how to do the activity) and a QR code linked to a video demonstrating the activity.

  • Assessment Framework

An assessment framework will also be included, allowing recording or progress (or regression) in completing the activity or the level of scaffolding or support needed. Suggestions for adding further challenge will also be included, such as beating personal best, being fastest, doing with one hand or with non-dominant hand.
